Spray Painting
1973 | Brentwood, Missouri
Acrylic on canvas | H: 48/122 W: 96/244 (in/cm)

This is an example of an early sprayed crosshatch line painting. Using only the three primaries, the texture and density of color line changed from painting to painting. After Nickel had made 10 paintings like this with slight variations, he found the paintings became very unsatisfactory in themselves and decided to treat them as grounds for a rigid grid overlay. The grids were masked out with tape in a hard-edge fashion, and were brush painted in a monochrome solid. The spray paintings were a transition to the larger paintings of 1974 to 1977.
