Ready Made Excuses “Ready Made Excuses” was also completed in the MFA program at Columbia. Work at that time was undergoing experimental change as topics from self-help books were employed in the form of words applied to the surfaces of sculpture. A confounding technique was used to partially disguise the words allowing for a purely visual perception rather than a cognitive one. The tension between “reading” a work and “seeing it” were explored. The full sentence reads: “Ready made excuses set up a pattern of bland living.” The use of words received little support from the faculty. |
