Drop Out #2  (Drop Out Series)
1986 | New York City
Etching | H: 9/23 W: 6/15 (in/cm)

Nickel completed the “Drop Out” series of etchings at Columbia University in 1986. Each print in the series presents an imaginary sculptural form floating within galactic space and involves a secretion — a dropping out — of an organic sack from a more mechanical block of fragments. It is a dialogue between organic and mechanical forces working together to create a sculptural object. Nickel was trying to work more organic elements into the geometric thinking that had been prominent in his work. The “Drop Out” etchings led to his Baltic Birch sculptures about six years later.
